Overview
The Shiba Inu is a small hunting and companion dog. It is the smallest spitz breed native to Japan.
Appearance & Grooming
The Shiba Inu is a small dog with a strong neck and a muscular body. The breed has a dense double coat in red, cream, sesame, black and/or tan. The Shiba Inu sheds seasonally and requires weekly brushing when shedding.
Behavior & Disposition
The Shiba Inu is loyal, sensitive, independent, and confident. They are more comfortable and trustworthy around older children. Adult supervision is recommended when playing with other puppies, dogs and small children.
Activity Level
The Shiba Inu has a moderate activity level and it is easy for the breed to become overweight. For optimal health, the Shibu Inu should be carefully monitored for calorie consumption and should have daily walks.
Training
The Shiba Inu is very independent, which makes obedience training – especially ‘heel’ and leash manners – necessary.
