The Tibetan Mastiff originated from the Tibetan area of China. The breed is a companion dog, watch dog, and guard dog. The breed adapted to alpine climates early on, where they protected houses.
Appearance & Grooming
The Tibetan Mastiff is an extra large dog with a wide, strong neck. The breed has a thick double coat in black, gray, blue, brown, red, and tan. The Tibetan Mastiff sheds seasonally and requires brushing three times per week when shedding.
Behavior & Disposition
The Tibetan Mastiff is known for its aloof, independent, stubborn, courageous, and protective personality. They tend to play well with older children. However, adult supervision is recommended when playing with younger children and other dogs.
Activity Level
The Tibetan Mastiff has a moderate activity level and it is easy for the breed to become overweight. It is recommended to feed them high-quality dog food as they age.
Training
The Tibetan Mastiff is a very smart dog, and can become easily bored during repetitive training sessions. Fun, short training sessions are an effective way to train this breed. Early socialization and obedience training are recommended.
